On Transformative Learning

Transformative Learning

What are we dreaming into/ what would we like to come away with?/what’s the miraculous birth outcomes?/

I have a particular interest in higher education, but the connections between formal and informal education, and not breaking those up are important.

Discretionary education, for developing ourselves, not for credit. The kind of creativity that sparks creativity, actually changes my mind, and sparks creativity. A juicy background in which I can invent new things. If I’m not inspired, it’s not good for them or for me.

Reflecting on: what am I dreaming into in terms of what I would like to come away from this exploration about transformative learning.

-Tools for building trust and self esteem in the school system, especially post secondary

-Sense of dimensions of transformative learning, how does it integrate with life long learning, and the meme of self design

-Resources, existing programs that enable transformative learning, and the history of those programs and their curriculums

-Corporations need to learn too, I’m interested in how to make conversation as collective intelligence can be leveraged there.

-I do work in consulting and community organizing. What are ways to create atmospheres in which we think together so that the thoughts that emerge are so hot people can’t remember where it came from

-a) working on something like a three month long higher ed b) the interest just mentioned

-stories of qualities of a student that coorelate to success in transformative learning

-design of the context that holds there conversations, what qualities of deisgn does that have to have?

-dealing with complex adaptive challenges, finding a global network

-pre-contract phase with groups where you make sure the leaderhisp group is in alignment, so there is support for continuing after I’m gone. Ways to evaluate good fits with skills and intentions

-how can we use new tech to reach people who can’t afford to pay the prices for programs

-global wisdom council of educators

-cross border international accreditation body cross-linked with existing colleges and universities

-encouraging emergent leadership, especially in times of crisis, around initiation and community building

-urgency of bringing conversations to corporate decision makers. I envision an on going think tank that shares ideas of patterns that are emerging, and looking to engage with junctures of power and influence.

-transformative learning is about changing us into something that we are not, that we don’t know. How do we prepare beings for this transformation

-the sense of how can we learn tools to embody the accelerated change that’s going to be powering through here

-I’m wondering if there’s any relation or if it might fit in for rites of passage and ritual work outside visual quests, of sorts

-how do we share the ideas in a new and powerful way, feedback lopps back into the system, back into this network that we’re envisioning or embodying

SOME PEOPLE (the group is much larger)

Jean: designing space

Margot: tools for change

Susan: integration of masc and fem, for mid career folk

Karl: compiling a list of global wisdom council of educators

Stephan Martineau: developing courses, linking people for accreditation processes

Bill Kauth: social inventor

What does Transformative Learning look like?

Let’s do a Build-Upon. If you agree with someone, you don’t need to speak, but if you want to build on please jump in. This is not one where everybody needs to speak

Small Group discussion that would help us be more concise on getting up the key points.

The phrases to look at are Transformative Learning, and Conscious Evolution. How would you know that these had occurred.

Indicators:

-People coming up with new ideas

--a complete physical change in the person’s face, or their posture or physique

-joy, and emotional fluidity, heart bubbling up, new radiance

-I’m listening

-the capacity to hold complexity, and creativity and integrative thought

-Joy: as the process of becoming a more complex being, as distinct from pleasure. When I risk I become a more complex being

-can someone undergo transformation without spiritual experience

-increasing interconnectedness

-penetrating questions. So what is the relationship between critical thinking skills and transformative learning

-having an expanded circle of concern, seek patterns, think systemically

-self authoring

-a quieting or centering, and the opposite of a high energy showing up, a shift in energy

-it’s something that sticks, that doesn’t disappear the new day

-you create the field and people resonate with the field

-authenticity

-ways to invite grace

-a lot of the indicators are indicators that we’re looking for as the facilitator, yet it seems that to really know transformational experience has occurred it needs to be self identified and expressed from the participants. They own it, take responsibility for it, can express it, identify it, describe it. True application happens during the going home part. Where an individual identifies the transformational process usually afterwards. To measure, we have to be able to do follow up long after the fact. Often families see the huge shift in us.

-indicators look different in each individual

-it’s not lonely, you can sustain the change

-media and tech, there’s a post period that could use tech for a support system

-more at cause than at effect

-in a transformational learning environment, we wouldn’t use the word teach, we would facilitate learning, it’s self motivated

-collectivity carries itself, and in that process we’re all more of who we are

Conscious Evolution

-transformative learning is a path of conscious evolution, transformation is smaller steps, it’s a subset of conscious evolution

-desire to create spaces and technologies and tools and projects and techniques where transformative learning’s happening

-partly I feel like we don’t know, spiral dynamics is one model of indicators of evolution. It’s certainly a evolutionary map, suggesting that someplace dream or post dream becomes conscious

-increasing compassion and empathy

-getting closer to the reason why we’re here. Realizing potential and purpose

-what world view is passed on to children

-embodying teaching, embodying knowledge. Transmission.

“the success of an intervention is dependent on the quality of the individual.” How does transformation ripple out

…….

Further questions:

-living it instead of teaching it. Modeling, it’s further than facilitation. We ourselves are transformed in every interaction. It’s a very high practice. What is the relationship between transformative learning and the modeling and living of the learning.

-wisdom council, think tank, supportive global networks…the creation of emergence of a collaborative supportive entity.

-it’s one thing to try to frame questions, it probably is the most authentic thing to do, I’m personally very interested in seeing what would happen with a different frame. What if this situation was granted a bunch of money, how would we drive the initiatives…or something else that charges it, say the feds support the new curricula. How would this chamber advise. What then would be the most important questions that could be framed. Challenge of the idea of authenticity.

-how do we address elitism/exclusivity

-how can we recognize already existing programs and ideas, identify them and find the threads between them, which ones really work well. Important to look at the backbone before creating things which already exist. Can we create a map that is already practicing that. What does a map of that look like?

-what are the elements of a curriculum for transformative learning, for programs of different lengths.

-there’s so many forms of transformation. I’m interested in the kind of knowing that will help us name the questions and respond to them.

-if we can imagine the breakdown of econ and transport systems etc, and some major problems based on global warming…what will it take to human beings to create a successful future. If we can start from there, we can look at how will we get people there?

-Integrative Sustainability

-evolutionary leadership capacity building. Alliance for New Humanity.

-difference between CE and TL. You can do TL at all levels of humanity, but we reach a stage where we can become creators of CE, and at that stage how can we dream up a strategy

-presidential advisory on approaches on education. All Children Right in Front Approach to education. (as opposed to No Child Left Behind). What’s it like to do a jim rough wisdom council

-Who gets to make the decisions? What are the elements of the programs?

-evolutionary media channel that is for evolutionary leadership. Big shift media, whole new enterprise around capacity

-I’d love to work on a curriculum

-integral parenting (Miriam Adonia’s mom) from conception to four years old, how do we start there and create a platform for children to be ready to participate fully?

-Circles for Change is a curriculum (Margot) knows

-transition between education and self education of leaders, for me requires a context and organization that already embodies the transformative principles. (Jean)
