Designing-organising Women Moving the Edge 1

Here we communicate all what is needed to get the invitation out - what is done in the mean time - and the gathering designed and organised.

Design so far

Design of WMtE:

general idea:

From the Art of Hosting: so much to do...  MtE was too open... we really need to guide them

Start - first day:
* start in silence: to land in the spot; to arrive; end the travel and open the gathering.

* after the silence some sharing

* and introduce the circle practices, bells, talking piece, bell for silence, basic conversation agreements.
When you name it you set a container, name it from the beginning. agree together.
women who resonate to our innovation are strong, articulate women! The sacred space in the beginning is needed! These strong women have the confidence and competence but there is still a lot of ego there!

* Also have space at the end of the first day so we can see what people can offer in the morning. Or juicy evening activities.

* Full Moon Meditation in the evening

Second day:
* The film, "The future speaks ruthlessly through her." Interview with 9 women around 5 questions: They go from the visionary to the more concrete. These questions are posted on-line.
- Film could be part of the opening on the second day.
- Lots of topics in the movie are really important: Collective community; Stepping into the world; taking up leadership. Every woman can pick up something for herself.
- The film could be a good introduction to a World Cafe.

* afternoon could be an Open Space.

Other ideas:
* exercise blind-folded, guiding one another, could be another time than the beginning.

* Appreciative inquiry: good to look very deeply at our core qualities to see what we really have and how it could translate into actions.
- Different steps in the design of AI. Discovery phase; other phases…
- Judy will look on-line for more details.

* Dancing and body movement for breaking the seriousness of the talking.

* maybe silence every day...

Harvest
Helen already signed up, she makes beautiful photos! Can show a slide show at the end (of every day)
Monica (will she come?) can make beautiful notes.

The Future speaks Ruthlessly through her

I just saw this film, made by Renata Keller (director of EnlightenNext in London) and Lee Chalmers. In this blog:  you can read the questions that they asked from 9 other women. I really think it is a good introduction and appetizer for our gathering. We could do a follow-up with a World Café I guess; as a start of the workshop.

Ideas as we design Women Moving the Edge

Ideas and thoughts for WMtE   Nov. 25, 2006

Combination of reflections from the Art of Hosting and the book that is very present right now Leadership can be Taught, by Sharon Daloz Parks.

Ideas in no particular Order

Intergenerational – important to have various ages and life stages in the conversation

The importance of “Mates”!!  So for us, that may be “Sisters”.  This means calling on each other for support, assistance, collaboration.

The importance of well crafted and powerful questions as ways to engage meaningful conversations.  These can be used throughout the time together to galvanize new thinking or a new direction.  They can come from the hosts and the participants.  We can create questions together.

The dance between order and chaos

Structure or lack of.  I am growing to see the importance of an underlying design which holds, supports, and nourishes the possibilities and creativity in the group.  There is a delicate balance.  When there is no structure or what was planned is not in alignment with what wants to emerge, then this bubbles up to the surface and the design has to adjust.  The ideal is to anticipate these kinds of unexpected turnings in the design so that it moves in rhythm with the group.

Paraphrasing a quote from Leadership can be Taught   Reflects the Leadership teaching of Ron Heifetz at Harvard.  P. 215  Quote by Dean Williams who teaches with Ron.

The group process and the leadership or the artist

“…there is a canvas, and you are going to create on that canvas, but it’s neither arbitrary nor capricious.  There is a design underneath it all – the framework we’re working with, but the manifestation of that framework is new every time.  So, as with any artist, you don’t create out of nothing.  Artists have their palette, their tools, and their orientation.  There is spontaneity and improvisation, but underneath that is the design, the model, the skill, the technology that allows us to do it relatively well.”

We can work with and explore women’s leadership in 3 ways:

  • Individual – how can each step into purposeful leadership in our own way
  • With the Other, the team, the group – how do we collaborate, who are we collectively as leaders?
  • With the community or the world – the larger picture – what is women’s leadership in the consciousness of women, how is it evolving, what is the shadow, what is emerging?  What does this mean for us?

The above can be a way to approach and to look at archetypes, the collective unconscious, individual path and purpose, how we hold ourselves and each other back, the cultural and societal norms we work within, the role of the warrior and the midwife, to name a few.

Warriorship can be the courage and action to continually give birth to something new.  So is this the yang that we need to bring forward to balance the midwife in us?

Authenticity – how can we create conversations that encourage authenticity, that can hold the awkward or difficult questions, and to do that at a level of consciousness that is fully present and aware of the delicate balance this presents.  To disagree or challenge but not to come to anger or insults.

Paradox – a lot about paradox and holding the “both and”.

The metaphor of the “dance floor” and the “balcony”

Idea of default settings.  How do our belief systems stop us, inhibit us, hold us back.  How do we bring to light these areas where default settings must change?

Leadership can be Taught   p. 196 Idea of  Trips (head trips) – our repeated behavioral patterns, the things we think we know, being right.  Traps (default settings)  How are we caught in Trips and Traps?

Leadership p. 210  Working on the Edge

p. 213 Improvisation – working on the edge within a field of interdependent relationships.  Create structure, boundaries, limits within which to improvise – the design, the framework underneath.

Harvesting or closing – consider the “fallow”, “planting” and “harvesting”

We all put on post-it stickies as individuals – what needs to lay fallow for now?

What are we planting, sowing the seeds for?

What are we harvesting, moving forward with into action?

We then put these up on a big chart under the headings Fallow, Planting, and Harvesting.  Then we went into small groups of 4 each and shared what we had put down and talked about that.  It was very powerful.  It also gave an opportunity to connect with others we had not yet connected to.

We came back to the large group.  The facilitators shared some themes they saw on the stickies under each heading.

We then closed the circle.  We stood and held hands, looked around at all the faces.  Then we dropped hands and turned around and took a large step out (as the circle widened and we prepared to leave)

Open Communication

Eugenie,

Please know that I understand your communication style and way with language.  And so I use that as a filter when I hear you or read your words.   This learning to put words out in a new way and in Enlgish may be a new way for you of learning as well.  And isn't that wonderful.! You have so many deeply felt things that you care about and want to communicate.  This is an opportunity to do that, to step back, to think about all the possibilities of how your message is put forward and received.  I encourage you to do that and to open the way for us together to explore our different styles.

I am disppointed you will not be on the call as we could talk about this a bit more.  Maybe we can do that another time on a separate call.  I will be traveling until Nov. 5, so it will be after that. But we can continue this way on-line.  Please be easy on yourself.  You are really putting yourself forward and there are bumps along the way.  Hang in there.  (Slang for "stay with it" and my encouragement to stay with us as the convening team

Love,

Judy

Thoughts about my communication

Dear Judy, I have to apologize. I am so sorry that I was not able to communicate my thoughts in a more gentle way. It is not my intention to create a harsh energy between the two of us. I like you very much and I learn a lot of you. I have no negative feelings toward you, nor to the work you did. And you did a lot of work and I admire you for your input and way of expressing yourself. There is nothing wrong with that. There is something wrong with my english and the way I use words. Reading your input did not raise negative feelings in me at all. Unfortunately my own words did. Because of this, I reconsider my membership of the conveining team. In my own language I can create things I did not intend at all.. In English it appears to be worse. Again, I am very very sorry. Eugenie

Thoughts about the Invitation

Hi Eugenie and Ria,

I appreciate both of your thoughts and comments.  When I first saw what you wrote Eugenie, I had to distance myself.  I put a lot of deep thought into what I wrote, and likely there are too many words.  And it is mental  - that is also why I want to include other things like ritual, dance, movement, etc.  And what I put forward is just the beginning for an inviation.  I also see the words arranged and spaced with pictures and other things that create movement and interest - like the Art of Hosting invitation the Ria showed us.  I tried to take what Ria had done before, added your interest and attraction to the word "Edge" ( and mine too) and also to create substance.  If a woman is going to join us, to pay, and be really present, then she will want to know what is this really about.  What will I learn?  How will I be challenged?  There is still more that we need to add or change, and that can be part of our conversation today.

I look forward to that.  This is certainly a growing and learning process for me - in communication, interaction, and learning my own edge for taking leadership.

Invitation

Please, don't take my words as an attack. I can see that it is possible to read it that way but that is not not not my intention. What keeps me is exactly what is happening right now: that I try to express myself in a proper way but that it turn out to be the wrong words. Judy, did you feel bad about my writing? I hope not..

What would you keep from the invitation?

To do justice to Judy; it is her writing and not mine. And I am surprised about the quality of it! Maybe we can trim it down;  make it "shorter, empowering and inviting". What would you keep???

Invitation

Ladies!! I am stunned, puzzled to see how much work both of you did... pfew! So many words, so many questions... All those questions "How to"... seems so mental.. My input is to make it more simple, more direct.. The subject we are going to explore is Leadership of women. That is very wide.. I prefer to choose a direction within this wide range of possible subjects. We facilitate our experience, knowledge or whatever to open the space, to start the process and after that we see what will happen, what will emerge. I prefer to keep the invitation short, empowering and inviting. And I see that I am not able to write such a thing because I feel a lack of writing skills in english.. Just my two cents :>))

the Day Before - Friday March 2

I am definitely for getting together before  to energize the event, to hold the space, and to plan the parts that are enhanced by our in-person presence.  Thanks for getting this great place reserved.

It's happening.

Love,

Judy

Dates are set

I took an option for the venue from Saturday March 3rd from 4pm on till Tuesday March 6th after lunch.

I decided to start in the afternoon for people who need to travel, the same for ending after lunch. Of course we can still set other times if we think they are better. Unfortunately I cannot start on Friday, because I have to give an evening workshop; but I would like that we can gather something like morning or noon on Friday to prepare ourselves for the event.

My initial thoughts for an invitation

I know more will be needed, but these are my thoughts on how to really focus the invitation before adding some of the other things.  I really like the Invitation for the Art of Hosting and I think there are things we can use from that.  What I am including here is from a Word Doc that I can send you if we want to do some tracked comments/changes.

Women Moving the Edge
A purposeful gathering of conscious women who will explore Moving the Edge:
The Edge of learning for women as leaders
The Edge of what it means to fully step into our own and lead from that place of knowing
The Edge of conscious evolution as we discover and engage interactively in the moment
The Edge of possibility as we re-imagine, redefine, and co-create who we are and what we will do

Today’s world requires unparalleled courage and presence if we are to effect change.  From a place of inquiry, of suspending what we think we know, of moving beyond the edge of safety and harmony, we Women Moving the Edge have the opportunity to explore our individual and collective potential.  And in this gathering we will not only explore, we will be it, we will do it.

Guiding Questions
In exploring the Edge:

  1. What qualities of leadership do we envision are needed now to bring positive change for all of life on this planet?
  2. What unique qualities do women hold in this vision?  How are they core to who we are? What qualities have we not yet imagined?
  3. Who are we collectively? How does that hold us back?  Or how can that provide the doorway for us to step forward?
  4. What does conscious collective women’s leadership look like? How will we do and be that?  How will we bring that forward? Together?

What we will do
How will we explore the Edge? How will we be Women’s Leadership during this gathering?  What will we do?

The convening team will open the way for various modes of creative engagement and leadership.  These will include:

Dialogue / Group Inquiry – World Café, Enlightened Communication, and others to create a collective field of women’s wisdom
Open Space – small groups and large group harvesting
        Appreciative Inquiry ??
        Ritual, celebration, movement, dance, voice/tone/vibration
Connecting with Nature, going deeper in meditation and/or silence
Invitations to practice leadership in the moment – to view the system and patterns  from the balcony or to actively be in-the-moment flow and even chaos of the dance floor
Opportunities to take responsibility for next steps, collaborations, or projects

How will you show up in consciousness?
–       Open - expect the unexpected
–       Leaving behind what you already know so as to co-create in the moment
–       Holding the courage to find and move your edge
–       Being in a constant state of evolving inquiry, of curiosity
–       Steady in deep respect for the process
–       Ready to take risk, to move beyond safety
–       Holding the paradox of doing really important work and being ready to HAVE FUN!

Who is invited?
If what you have read speaks to you, if you are ready to fully engage in this way, you are invited.  We hope you will come.

Ideas and languaging for the invitation & how we will do it

The following are just ideas that came to me and I don't want to lose them - just put them in the field, the "Middle"

Oct. 22, 2006

Ideas for Women Moving the Edge

Some key words, concepts

The edge – learning edge, moving the edge of consciousness, the edge of a new way of stepping into leadership as women, exploring the edge

Collective

Women and Collective leadership

Use the Edge as a major part of the question

Where is the learning edge for each of us, for our role as women, as leaders, as contributors to a conscious society?

Some women things – collective consciousness

holding back, what is that about?

being relational – where is the edge between relational and confrontational and authenticity? How can we work with that?  How does this connect to our being effective leaders for change?

Our default settings, blind spots, what are they, how do they keep us from fully stepping into who we are?

Blaming – has this been a diversion from really stopping forward.

How are we collectively, are we willing to look into that?

Continue to contribute and draw from the conversations on Zaadz and see what others might be

Workshop modalities

Various kinds of dialogue – World Café, PCP, Enlightened Communication, others

Open Space – how can we best harvest for the large group the wisdom and learnings of smaller groups?

        Role of meditation and silence

Ritual – maybe creating new rituals for our time.  Can build upon the full moon.  Full moon is at 12:17 AM on March 4.  Best time to energize is in the hours preceding so perfect timing for us.

        Celebration, movement, dance, voice/tone/vibration

        Connect to Nature

Ways to practice leadership in the moment – views from the balcony and the dance floor  - refers to work of Ron Heifetz at Harvard and book Leadership Can Be Taught  by Sharon Daloz Parks

Role of U Theory and work of Otto Scharmer – article from Shambhala  Institute.  His new book on the U Process will be out in January, 2007 (they say)
