Mentorship as portals for dual-wisdom

Hi everyone,

I'm feeling quite inspired after reading your contributions to this space.

My initial interest to be part of an Intergenerational Gathering was to firstly celebrate my journey in the Pioneers network and also meet all you interesting people who's work has contributed to my reflections and approach.

I have had quite a bit of disappointment in engaging with "elders" in the past year or two and decided to a large extent to work independently with peers of my age. I often felt that some of the older generation was tired of revisiting questions that were old to them and I also could not see/recognize opportunities for dialogue.

My paradox is that I can only be in a mentorship relationship with someone who appreciates me as an equal - I value wisdom when not feeling patronized in knowledge offering. Quite a bit of this stems from my belief that each person's unique life experience, level of awareness and individual purpose overrules age.

I am still in the process of framing my 'wicked question' (thanks to Toke for this cool use of  language). My best shot for now: "What are the mutually beneficial ways for younger people to access the wisdom of elders while acknowledging their unique experience and purpose?"

With respect and love,
Lesley

intergen learning partnerships

Lesley, thank you for opening this conversation!

I also liked that you've put in quote marks the word "elders" in relation to your experience with folks from the older generation who were "tired of revisiting questions that were old to them and could not see/recognize opportunities for dialogue." As we know, age does not make one an elder. See also Bob Stilger's post on Eldering

Regarding your beautiful question, "What are the mutually beneficial ways for younger people to access the wisdom of elders while acknowledging their unique experience and purpose," I think one of them can be forming intergen learning partnerships, 1 on 1 or in small groups of pioneers from different generations, who have the same or complementary burning questions. Two of the functions of the intergenerational forum and wiki on Evolutionary Nexus is to help them discovering what those mutually fascinating questions are, then support the formation of such learning partnerships with the right mix of online tools.
